Tipi Forest
It's where you start and where you end up. It's a golden triangle of bright eyes, bodies and beats that can render you lost for hours at a time. Experience the alternate reality that is…Tipi Forest!
This year, for the first time, SPLENDOUR's Tipi Forest will open on Thursday to entertain onsite campers and then every evening throughout the festival until Sunday. The show kicks off before sunset and continues after the main stages have closed.
Step into the Tipi Forest between sets and explore this ever popular side stage, featuring underground electronic dance acts and a starlit dance floor.
At SPLENDOUR's Tipi Forest you can take in sounds unlike anything else at the festival, from acid to house, glitch to glam, electro to tech, trip hop to trance, drum and bass to dub step and beyond.
Famous as a destination for finding new friends and losing inhibitions, the Tipis are a spontaneous celebration in themselves. Surrender yourself to a top notch mish mash of beats that'll have you tripping across the dance floor. Soak in the ambience of esoteric post punk art, wild psychedelic projections and outrageous and incongruous performances.
All this and more is waiting for you at the Tipi Forest this year at SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS!

ALICE SPACE DOLL
THURSDAY 27TH
7.00pm – 7.30pm
SUNDAY 30TH
7.00pm – 7.30pm
Alice Space Doll, of the Sun - reincarnated onto planet Earth, Australia, July 1988. Inspired by the Universe, love, light, colour, psychedelic experiences, ear twisting sounds, the human (and not so human) mind and all things in Creation, she is on a super space mission from the Sun to help, heal and inspire the Earth and it's beautiful beings. Oozing other worldly vibrations, Alice Space Doll creates her unique sound using electronic beats, psychedelic melodies and effects as well as acoustic instruments such as live drums, guitars and percussion. But the most beautiful sound incorporated into this cosmic mix is her voice - the ambient, haunting but sweet resonance and intention behind her channelled lyrics help to heal, inspire and awaken the light within us all...
BLUNT INSTRUMENT
A 5 minute lesson in beat mixing on a small farm in Northern New South Wales was the catalyst for 5 years of sharing a musical brain that has culminated into the production duo of Blunt Instrument. Fuelled by an addiction to early instrumental hip hop and a passion for heavy bass and break beats, the Blunt Instrument sound combines glitch hop, dub step and breaks into a sonic stew that is made for the dance floor. Searching for the most innovative techniques and unique sounds, the duo is constantly exploring new and adventurous ways to get bodies moving and booty's shaking.
CAPTAIN KAINE
Rising from the ashes of Sydney's nu wave scene, Captain Kaine relocated to Byron Bay to pursue an infamous DJ career. He began promoting his own night Cained before having residencies at the Beach Hotel and La La Land while playing events like Trip Kicks, Nothing You Expect and the Dark Disco Club. cK has played alongside Gorillaz, Felix Da Housecat and Friendly Fires as well as Cut Copy, the Bang Gang & Andy Murphy. He has featured at festivals including Splendour, Gatecrasher, Exodus, made guest appearances at Family, the Empire, DCM, Kinselas, Revolver, Bond and while visiting Berlin played Kubik. As Kaz James from the Bodyrockers says, "Captain Kaine is one of the best Australian DJs I have seen. His vinyl mixing skills are world class!"
CRETEN
It all started on one dark night when a group of young lads decided to go out to a party in the bush, on getting there they weren't too sure about it but by the time the sun come up they were hooked on the awesome sounds they had heard. It was then that Creten decided he loved the music and wanted to start DJing. So at the age of 16 he started playing at parties in and around the north coast of NSW. One thing led to another and after a few years of watching his good mates (Double Vision, Positive Thought and Spliffun) make some totally tilt tracks he decided it was time to get a computer and start making some of his own music. It was then that the project Creten started and after playing at some big festivals and parties such as Exodus & Mardi-Grass he slowly made a name for himself. He has just released his first album Dynomaniac. So stay tuned for some awesome tunes.
CUTLOOSE
Cutloose is a one man party mash-up machine, dropping Michael Jackson and Eurythmics alongside Run DMC and Daft Punk is like a walk in the park for this Heavy Bass Turntablist. From Brisbane, Australia, Cutloose is well known for his high energy DJ performances and non-stop party jams. Jumping from hip hop and electro club, to funk and disco as easy as ABC. His beat heavy glitch hop and dub step production has gained him popularity in the LA underground performing at Soul Sessions & Boombox. Being the first to ever cook and DJ at the same time, you’re always going to get a little something extra from Cutloose. You won't witness another DJ like him.
DAKINI
Dakini (Omelette/ Enig'matik Records) is one of Australia's high profile and longstanding female DJs. She has featured at Australia's top festivals playing the freshest sounds available, for over 11 years. Dakini recently directly supported Tipper on his Australian tour, and has been billed alongside the likes of Beats Antique, Heyoka, Vibesquad, Bassnectar, ill.gates, Ott, Bluetech and many other acclaimed international & national artists. She was recently handpicked to perform for visionary artists Alex & Allyson Grey as they painted live around Australia earlier this year, and has just returned from playing Sunrise Celebration in the UK. You can always expect a basslicious experience from the likes of this soundvixen, who currently plays templecrunk, wobblestep and ethnowhomp, usually alongside the world's best bass music artists. Catch her at this year's tastiest bass music events internationally, for an ethnocrunk session not to be missed.
DANIEL WEBBER
Daniel Webber can play music and he throws parties. Big ones, indoor/outdoor, club, beach - wherever you can fit a sound system and profuse amount of willing participants. Co-founder of 7whatevers, his role in unifying the Byron/Northern Rivers scene is undeniable and harbours the kind of loyalty you only get from an obsessed ex-lover. The jewel in his crown? The rabidly popular and always sold out Trip Kicks indoor festival series. Behind the booth he ticks all the boxes, reads a crowd, plays to the occasion and mixes tight as a goat. From a sweaty club night at La La Land to the main stage of a festival - Mix Up at Splendour In The Grass, Summafieldayze, Stereosonic, Creamfields, Parklife - and whatever you can imagine in-between. For his Splendour return set Webber will be bringing every bit of his party, house, techno & electro to the decks.
DANNY T
Brisbane DJ/producer/playboy millionaire Danny T has been a workhorse the past few years sharing his love for all things house across clubs and festivals all over Australia. He’s played festivals Future Music, Summafieldayze, Creamfields & Stereosonic as well as being booked to support Crookers, Claude Von Stroke, Sebastien Leger, Switch, Steve Aoki, Bloody Beetroots and more. His hard work has also seen him voted in the top 50 Australian DJs four years in a row with a high point of #9 in 2009. Following on from club weapon ‘Chico’ which was included on Ministry of Sounds – Maximum Bass Comp and his jacked up houser – Jazzcat (Sweat it Out), his latest single ‘Whine Ya Waistline’ features Baltimore’s finest OH SNAP!! and has been getting support from DJ’s around Oz and around the globe with it landing a coveted #1 spot in the Top 10 Australian club tracks in its 4rd week out, spending another 16 weeks in the top 10 with support from the likes of Yolanda Be Cool, Bass Kleph & Crookers.
DEE DEE
Dee Dee began his DJ career in the early 90s in the hills of Rosebank, Northern New South Wales. With 3 friends, a plastic bag full of records and a few practice sessions Dee Dee played his first gig. It was suitably atrocious. Fast forward 15 years and Dee Dee’s earned his stripes. Dee Dee created legendary Melbourne party club night Teriyaki Anarki Saki and promoted over 450 parties over 9 years playing with every international worth their salt from Jeff Mills to Bang Gang, from Tiga to Streetlife Deejays, and heaps more in between. Now, with one foot in Melbourne’s camp and the other in glorious Byron Bay, Dee Dee’s solid mixes of ass-shaking electro, techno and disco party tunes keep him in high demand up and down the east coast. From mixing it up on JJJ, to touring the USA and Asia, or rocking Big Day Out, Earthcore and Splendour… hands down, it’s the local festival crowds that Dee Dee LOVES best!
DEEGS
DEEGS means good times and grindy, dirty, funky tunes. But dig a little deeper and you find out that he is a passionate DJ, head of the event company 7Whatevers, responsible for Trip Kicks events and has just recently completed his Marketing/Event Management degree. In the last few years, Deegs has certainly cemented his name in the Byron/Gold Coast music scene with La La Land, Liquid, Ruby Tramp and Neverland all unleashing him behind the decks. Add to that playing to sell-out crowds at Trip Kicks parties as well as Parklife, Stereosonic, That Festival and his biggest achievement to date: thrashing out to 2000+ crowd during Splendour in the Grass 2009. He is keen to be back for an encore at the Tipi Forest this year.
GOOSEBUMPZ
Based in Brisbane, Goosebumpz emerged in 2007 and has since been a regular fixture at outdoor dance parties, festivals and club gigs across Australia. These days, he’s moving air and inciting dance floor mayhem with a free-range exploration of genres, where juicy, psychedelic dub-step meets solid, funky mid-tempo breaks and staunch, progressive electro. Goosebumpz is becoming a prominent figure in the Australian underground electronic music scene and with releases on Enig’matik, Hopskotch, Disconekta and Morning Monster Records as well as an arsenal of fresh, phat, cheeky beats, he is excited to shake the Tipi Forest with his eclectic style.
LANDSOAKEN
Since 2003 Landsoaken has shaken ground across East Coast Australia, peddling an ever evolving collection of sounds from anything with two feet in the underground. It's a versatility and disregard for genre typecasting that provides the opportunity to make the hard stuff look easy - combining a multitude of styles and technology, as he takes both the takes both the dance floor and the chin strokers alike on a progression of glitch hop, ghetto funk, break beat and tech-funk. Join the following that’s come to expect a super tight, bass-heavy, funk fuelled audio adventure.
MOISTA CLOISTA
Moista Cloista gears up to deliver his bass heavy ghetto wonk sound for Splendour In The Grass this year. Partner in crime for the Deliverance Festival and Australian based record label and event crew SixBux Productions, this is one man who stands tall representing the Bass Music movement is Australia. Moista Cloista was last seen experimenting with heinous bass-lines and wonky dub inspired beats at club nights and festivals including Earth Freq, Manifest, Wide Open Space & Cairns Winter Solstice alongside artists such as: Datsik (UK), Tipper (UK), iLL Gates (CAN), Spoonbill (OZ), Jpod (CAN), Dov (USA), Propa Tingz (USA), Babylon System (USA), Broken Note (UK), Grouch (NZ), Bar 9 (UK) and many more.
MSG
Never expect the same set from MSG, a living jukebox, whose versatility sees him deliver anything from deep house and dubby tech grooves through to complex, progressive bangers. A regular punter at some of Sydney’s most unique electronic events over the past 15 years, MSG first turned to the decks in 1996. Having played in clubs across Australia and at festivals such as Rainbow Serpent, Splendour in the Grass and Playground Weekender, you can be sure MSG’s tunes will be on the money, at any time, day or night. A regular on the Sydney scene, playing alongside internationals such as Michael Mayer, Superpitcher, Jamie Jones, Minilogue, Extrawelt, Format: B, Boris Brejcha and Max Cooper (to name a few), MSG also keeps himself busy running Subsonic Music - a festival, a music label and much more...
N-ZED
N-Zed has banged the tech with global superstars like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, Carl Craig, Green Velvet, Mathew Jonson and a load more. He won a bunch of DJ awards early on in his career, whilst catching the electro bug working it hard at Sydney's old skool vinyl hang Reachin Records (RIP) in '95. After moving to Melbourne, Nathan found himself back in good ol' Sydney Town where you would mostly find him behind the counter at Australia's hottest vinyl supplier Spank! He now resides up north busting out coffees at his cafe in Burleigh Heads and comes out every now and then to get jiggy on the decks. A broad range of electronica from tech/electro to downbeat and experimental grooves are the order of the day, but don't discount this man's ability to ignite a dance floor anywhere, anytime.

UBERHAMMER
Once upon a time in a magical far away land, two young men went on a mystical journey filled with smiling unicorns, candy Snapple and strawberry crimes. As they pranced through the fields of honey and mermaids they began to yearn for other pleasures, more exotic things to coax even the most hardened into a state of gentle intoxication. Finally after a great length of time and many adventures they found the mystical house made from many delights, the place they had always been searching for. As they climbed off their trusty lollipop ponies and eyed off its many treasures, they both started to wonder how such an amazing fantasy had come to be. Then they woke up and made some rave. Enter the Uberhammer….

A FRENCH BUTLER CALLED SMITH
Gold Coast based world music band A FRENCH BUTLER CALLED SMITH have been performing their high energy Latin, funk, instrumental fusion over a 2 year period to ever increasing audiences on Australia's East Coast. The initial creators behind this all organic dance music sound were acoustic guitar aficionado (Scott French), bass maestro (Jake ‘the Butler’ Martin) and respected world percussion artist (Brennan Smith). These original members have now been joined by esteemed musicians Mark ‘Gibbo’ Gibson on saxophone and Liam ‘Rasta’ Dorney on trumpet and it has invariably lifted the energy of the band and their multi-layered sounds of Latin, gypsy, world-roots and funk to ecstatically captivating levels. They are all consuming to watch, and it is impossible to keep your feet still once you are within the energy realms of their music.
After recent festival performances such as Byron Blues Festival, Melbourne's High Vibes Festival, Snowy Mountains Music Festival, Utribe Festival, Caloundra Music Festival and Island Vibes Festival, Illawarra Folk Festival, Rainbow Serpent Festival (Vic) and the Woodford Folk Festival, the band has ventured into the studio to record their debut album 'the Milkdrop Circus' due to be released early 2010 with national touring to launch the release. A FRENCH BUTLER CALLED SMITH are ready to take their evolving sound to a world audience, inspiring music lovers in venues and on dance floors across the planet. Their musical intentions are to bring people together for an all organic, spirited experience for the sole purpose of celebrating the joy of living. And their live performances are a testament to that admirable vision.
A French Butler Called Smith will perform on Thurs 28th
Rapskallion
Rapskallion present their own inimitable brand of wild junk yard blues, take me tango’s, rambunctious punk rock polka’s and old world romance, all served on a bed of exquisite hobo finery. Come expecting the unfathomable, the ridiculous, merriment for its own wine sodden sake, corseted bandit wenches, vaudevillian pirates, and a damn good time. Like buccaneers gone electric or muppets livin in a bordello, Rapskallion have got more character than a Dickens novel.
DRUM CULT
Drum Cult, lead by Chinta Reiss, is set to be a unique interactive drumming experience, incorporating powerful African rhythms, Samba grooves and dynamic vocal chants. Their performance utilizes a wide range of African drums. An exciting sound and visual treat, this will be a performance guaranteed to have audiences stomping and get the dust flying. Chinta is a dynamic group facilitator, teacher and performing artist. Chinta inspires greatness in his students and workshop participants. With his enthusiastic friendly style Chinta will create an uplifting rhythm charged experience.
THE NEXT STEP
The Next Step, Directed by Dein Perry and Created/Choreographed by Jason and Kris Lewis is bold, innovative, fresh and guaranteed to impress. Returning to Splendour, after cultivating their new show with Dein Perry, we can’t wait for you to see what The Next Step have planned to delight us this year. This all male cast of young performers offer something truly exciting and unique. Their performance is a fusion of hip-hop, tap and break dancing. Backed with an original score, vocals and musicians. These elements fuse together seamlessly to create a high voltage mesmerizing show. Its street and stage, dance and music at its finest.
SAMBILISCIOUS
Sambaliscious is one of Queensland's premier Samba performance groups! Experience the beauty of Rio Carnival dancers complete in sequined bikinis and feathered headdresses, the electrifying rhythms of tribal percussion, the hipnotic and sensual movements of Belly dancers and exotic hip swaying of South Pacific Island Hula dancers!
MR PERCIVAL
Mr Percival returns to the Global Village in 2011 to deliver amazing vocal workshops & inspiring performances. If you have not yet seen him work his magic, then be sure to join him daily to see what all the fuss is about! A childhood spent in Mexico inspired the canvas for his ‘spontaneous vocalization’, and recording monthly cassette tapes for family and friends back home in Australia propelled his fascination with recording the human voice and being able to play it back. After hours experimenting in the studio, Darren developed his ability to sing unaccompanied by any instruments and created his unique sound. The introduction of a series of looping pedals moved the music from the studio to the stage. An inspiring trip to New York city in 2004 to study with his mentor Bobby McFerrin saw Darren returning to begin performances of his spontaneous vocal creations as Mr. Percival with the live show ‘Out Of The Loop’.
Few artists paint with sound. Darren has travelled on such a colourful musical adventure throughout his career, and has found an original way to reflect his environment in each performance by using only his voice. His journey is simply a wonderful story and truly a great achievement.
THE GYUTO MONKS OF TIBET
Of course, the Gyuto Monks live in their monastery in the foothills of the Himalayas in Dharamsala, home to the Dalai Lama but it is a measure of their profile in Australia and the exchange of the affection and love between them and the Australian community that they are claimed as Australian when the fleeting fame of the Grammy Awards touches them following the release of their ‘Pure Sounds’ latest chanting CD.
This is a strange phenomenon. Rock star monks, serious tantric masters from an illustrious Tibetan Buddhist monastery established in 1475 and still following the pure 700 year old tradition in exile, who serve the Dalai Lama at home and on stage during his visits to Australia, who crop up in ABC TV programs Australian Story and Foreign Correspondent, who appear with the Sydney Symphony at the Opera House but also at music festivals such as Splendour in the Grass. The Gyuto Monks have been visiting Australia annually for 17 years this year and for the past decade, the tours have been year round. What is this? It’s a record most entertainers would be jealous of!
There’s a simple answer. Genuine love, integrity, no judgment, acceptance – to be in the presence of the Gyuto Monks is to experience a rare emotion – whoever you are and whatever you do or have done is as it is, you are special, unique and the same pure person inside as you were at birth – the rest is crusted on layers, always capable of being stripped away to reveal a new maybe better you. As the monks will say, we live in the infinite present, there is always the opportunity to be different, to do things differently.
And they laugh, they smile, they have fun. Sounds like we are in for a treat.
The Gyoto Monks will chant at 8am and 6pm daily on the Temple Stage and will perform the Sand Mandala Dissolution Ceremony after the Splendour Peace Parade on Sunday afternoon

PENNI DONOVAN – GENTLE YOGA
Come and enjoy a Yoga practice, suitable for the complete beginner to a practiced Yogi each morning at the Temple Stage. The focus of the daily practice will be to maintain your vitality and balance in all aspects of yourself; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to enhance your Splendour experience.
Penni is a qualified Yoga Teacher with the Krishnamacharya Healing and Yoga Foundation (KHYF) based in India. KHYF teaches the classical principle that Yoga is a dynamic and evolving process, rather than a fixed style of practice. We teach with the principle ‘respecting the individual’ and when teaching groups each student is provided with attention and care whilst still maintaining an overall specific focus. Penni has been practicing Yoga since 1998 and in 2007 began training to become a KHYF Yoga Teacher. Since graduating Penni has been teaching Yoga in private consultations, small group classes, and pregnancy classes on the Sunshine Coast. “I feel passionately about the wonderful benefits offered through the Yoga Philosophy and take great pride in teaching this ancient and timeless philosophy which enables any individual the opportunity to improve their own lives. I give thanks and gratitude for this blessing everyday and look forward to sharing a small part of what Yoga has to offer with you at Splendour 2010.”
Penni will teach Yoga on Saturday & Monday at 9.00am
ALEX GRANT – DYNAMIC YOGA
I attended my first yoga class at Integral Yoga in New York in 1996. It was a very mellow hatha yoga class, with lots of meditation and slow breathing. There were relaxed yoga poses that moved from one to the next, with a break between each pose. For the first 5 years of my practice, I believed that this was all there was to yoga. Then in 2002, I travelled to Mysore in south India and practiced Ashtanga yoga, a very dynamic form of yoga. This changed my understanding of yoga. I resonated with the strong asanas and regular breath. I practiced Ashtanga faithfully for about 5 years. Then during the last several years, my practice has become less of a routine. Now I fluctuate from practicing Ashtanga to doing a mellow Hatha practice, to just sitting in meditation and deep breathing. I like to bring this flexible approach to my teaching, not getting caught up in a 'Style' but instead, focusing on what is yoga about!
Alex is also the founder of FindYoga, a directory to help you find a Yoga class anywhere in Australia:
www.findyoga.com.au is an Australian yoga directory that aims to connect people looking for yoga teachers, studios, classes, workshops and retreats. It lists over 500 yoga studios and teachers and over 600 yoga events at any one time. It is location based, so people can search according to where and when they would like to do a class and find the most convenient classes.
Alex will teach Yoga Friday and Sunday at 9am
GWYN WILLIAMS – ZENTHAI YOGA
Gwyn is the founder of Zen Thai Shiatsu, a healing art which is rapidly gaining popularity on the sunshine coast for its dynamic, focused and heart-centred approach with excellent results. He is also the facilitator of Mt Ninderry Healing Centre, where he runs a busy clinic and teaches classes on the above Healing Arts, Yoga and Martial Arts.
Zenthai Yoga allows us to focus on the many ways we can mindfully move our bodies as individuals and in partnership with an awakened presence devoid of judgement. The intention is to fully comprehend the magic that is revealed when we attend to the simple and present.
Gwyn is a healer completely passionate about the qualities of life force energy… not only its ability to sustain, vitalise and heal but also to unify and magnify lives.
Gwyn will offer Zenthai Yoga workshops on Saturday & Sunday

Splendour Forum
After SPLENDOUR FORUM’s successful debut last year, the festival’s live discussion program returns with more platefuls of meaty issues to devour, chew over and digest - and some inspiring treats to savour. Join an eclectic array of musicians, comedians, film-makers, writers, artists, actors, tech geeks, politicians and scientists as they tuck into some tasty issues du jour, 10am-4pm daily.
KEYNOTE INTERVIEW & AUDIENCE Q&A
Perry Farrell with Wil Anderson
Splendour Forum is proud to present Jane’s Addiction’s legendary frontman Perry Farrell for our inaugural Keynote Interview and Audience Q&A. Comedian and Gruen Transfer host Wil Anderson chats to the outspoken musician, festival-founder and humanitarian activist, and then opens the floor for questions.
“One of the most enjoyable and successful Splendour attractions was the inaugural Q&A forums held each day and the music trivia sessions hosted by Myf Warhurst and Sam Pang… The well-attended sessions were terrific dialogue starters that showed there is a hunger for even timetable-harried festival fans to engage in music on a more cerebral level. Will other festivals follow the lead?” Jo Roberts, The Age
PANEL: "Big Brother v Little Brother..."
“Big Brother v Little Brother: From Government and Big Business to WikiLeaks and Anonymous, Who Really Controls Our Online Secrets?"
Splendour Forum is honoured to have WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s mother, Christine, as a special guest on a panel exploring the issues surrounding internet freedom and her son’s extraordinary role. Are faceless hackers conquering the worId by stealth from their laptops, by disabling banking systems and flooding government sites with porn? Or are they helping pioneer a global political, social and cultural revolution by exposing corrupt and oppressive regimes? Why has Julian Assange been labeled “the most dangerous man in the world” while human rights organisations shower him with awards? And what does it all mean for us - the internet-dependent citizens of the world – when governments can censor content and our bank accounts and phones can be hacked?
The Chaser’s Julian Morrow moderates a tech-wise panel including Hungry Beast presenters and tech geeks Marc Fennell and Nick Hayden; IT research fellow Dr Suelette Dreyfus, who co-wrote Underground: Tales of Hacking, Madness and Obsession on the Electronic Frontier with Julian Assange in 1997 about his early days in Melbourne hacking scene; internet security analyst and podcaster Patrick Gray; Julian Assange’s Australian lawyer Grace Morgan; and his campaigning mother Christine Assange, as they examine the various forces wrestling for control of our online lives.
PANEL: "Climate Change..."
"Climate Change: Where Are This Generation's Protest Songs?"
Bob Dylan became the voice of social unrest during the US civil rights and anti-war movements of the ‘60s. By the ‘80s, Bob Geldof was urging us to “Feed the World” and Midnight Oil was pushing for Aboriginal land rights and nuclear disarmament. But where are Gen Y’s protest songs in the face of climate change?
Comedian, broadcaster and environmentalist Greig Pickhaver (aka HG Nelson) probes a panel of musicians, artists, scientists and young politicians about their commitment to tackling the "greatest moral challenge of our time". Panelists including Hungry Beast presenter and comedian Dan Ilic, who wrote the provocative Climate Scientist Rap; Jake Stone from Bluejuice; Australia's youngest-ever Federal MP Wyatt Roy; Splendour’s environmental manager and music industry waste reduction expert Mat Morris; Al Gore protégé and lawyer Guy Abrahams from art-world sustainability lobby group ClimArte; young climate scientist Dr Ailie Gallant; environmental economist and 2011 Splendid Arts Lab provocateur Jodi Newcombe; and Australian Youth Climate Coalition representative Ahri Tallon get hot under the collar about global warming - and what on Earth we are all doing about it.
WOMEN OF LETTERS
Splendour Edition II
Writers Marieke Hardy and Michaela McGuire are back to celebrate the beautiful lost art of letter writing with their second special co-ed Splendour edition of Women of Letters. Artists including Isobel Campbell (ex-Belle & Sebastian), Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe), Scott Owen (The Living End), Kevin Mitchell (Jebediah, Bob Evans), Hayley Mary (The Jezabels), Johnny McKay (Children Collide) and Jae Laffer (The Panics) each narrate their own personal “Letter to the Song They Wish They’d Written” and perhaps even play or perform it. The audience is then invited to pen and post their own special missives with paper, envelopes and stamps provided.
“A 10am Women of Letters event proves surprisingly popular among the bleary-eyed and literary-minded… All of the Forum events are lively, inspiring and, at the very least, entertaining. Full marks to organisers for co-ordinating such cerebral activities among the frivolity.’’ Andrew McMillen, Mess and Noise
“A great excuse to exit my tent before the condensation evaporated came with the Marieke Hardy-curated special event Women of Letters… A smartly-attired Alex Gow from Oh Mercy described… his personal awakening the first time he heard The Triffids’ “Wide Open Road”. His letter to fellow sharp-dresser Dave McComb, even amid all the heart-on-sleeve moments on the music stages, probably counted as one of Splendour’s most poignant moments.” Andrew Crook, The Vine
FILM & PANEL: "Whose Island Home?"
"Whose Island Home? What Does It Mean To Be An Australian Artist?"
“Wake up - this country needs a f***king shake up…” sang The Herd in their controversial hit “77%” about racist views towards asylum seekers. But if “Captain Cook was the very first queue jumper (and) it was immigrant labour that made Australia plumper”, then what does it really mean to be Australian? And why, in 2011, do we still suffer from the cultural cringe that rates local sporting heroes over musicians and artists - and demands Aussie artists succeed overseas before they deserve recognition at home?
The Chaser’s Julian Morrow skippers a diverse panel of musicians, film-makers, actors, writers and comedians as they navigate the stormy seas of asylum, immigration and national identity – with art as their compass and lifebuoy. Panelists include The Herd frontman Tim Levinson (aka Urthboy); Stav Yiannoukas from Bluejuice; filmmaker and human rights advocate Sian Darling and her short film You’d Sing Too, about artists who have survived the refugee experience; Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) general manager Nick O'Byrne, who released The Key Of Sea album of collaborations between high-profile Australian artists and refugee musicians; former Iranian student protester and author Zarah Ghahramani whose best-seller My Life As A Traitor tells her story of imprisonment by Iranian authorities; Aboriginal actor and 2011 Splendid artist Katherine Beckett; The Chaser’s Dominic Knight and music lawyer Julian Hewitt.
APRA Presents: Songwriters Speak
APRA presents an intimate chat with three Australian songwriters, each at different stages of their careers, including Wally de Backer (aka Gotye), Alexander Gow (Oh Mercy) and Heather Shannon (The Jezabels). Hungry Beast presenter and electropunk singer Monique Schafter chats to the trio of emerging artist, sophomore-album indie darling and established, multi-ARIA award-winner, about their musical influences, lyrical inspirations, favourite songs, musical idols and approaches to the beautiful craft of songwriting.
WIL DOES PARKY
Side-splittingly funny comedian and ABCTV host Wil Anderson returns to Splendour Forum with his entertaining Michael Parkinson-style chat show and a sparkling array of guests from the Splendour line-up and beyond. Guests include former Jane’s Addiction manager and Lollapalooza co-founder Ted Gardner, the Aussie music entrepreneur who went on to manage or tour manage Echo & The Bunnymen, New Order, The The, Crowded House, Tool, The Verve, The Cramps, Queens Of The Stone Age and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
DEBATE: “Social Media: Good or Evil?”
Do social networking sites represent the future of human interactions, from friendship and romance to business and politics? Or are they, as Julian Assange said recently, international “government spying machines” and a conspiracy by advertisers to sell us stuff we’ve already publicly declared that we “like”?
SBS Eurovision host and comedian Sam Pang chairs a lively debate about whether Mark Zuckerberg’s revolutionary Facebook software and others like it are ultimately good or evil. Triple J’s tech geek Marc Fennell, comedian Dan Ilic, Can of Worms social media jockey Monique Schafter, Hungry Beast presenter Nick Hayden, The Chaser’s Dominic Knight and media lawyer Julian Hewitt face off about the merits and dangers of posting, friending, liking and tagging.
MUSIC TRIVIA
Team up with your friends and pit your musical wits against celebrity band teams including Eskimo Joe in a session of Music Trivia with hosts Sam Pang and Michaela McGuire.
“One excellent initiative this year was the daily music trivia over in the Forum tent, which also hosted panels on issues du jour like social media and privacy, a feminist letter writing event and a Wil Anderson chat show.” Marcus T, The Vine
“Day three started with me wanting to go to another forum… where Wil Anderson… was doing a Parkinson. He was very clever, extremely funny and quick… I laughed ‘til I cried.’’ Catholica Forum
